Making Rawhide that Stays Flat
Problem: Rawhide absorbs moisture, and, as such, will always be subject to warping based on environmental humidity. Painting rawhide adds to the problem as it absorbs some moisture from the paint, causing it to expand in the painted areas but not in others. There is no ready solution to get that rawhide perfectly flat and for it to stay that way. It'll always be warping whenever the humidity changes. The only good partial solution for rawhide items not made in the process described in this article is to physically wrestle with it (bend over knee, etc.) in the areas that are warped the worst and try to get it "KINDA flat".
Bottom Line: For rawhide to stay flat, it has to be made with that in mind using the traditional techique described in this article. It ain't easy, but it works!
